Hello,

I am planing to setup an online shop to sell designs from templates to other graphic components. I want to know if I need to register a company in the UK to be able to sell online or what should I do. I searched on Google but no luck to find any useful information and I am hoping there is someone here that can help me.

Don't worry I will still release free themes and so :)

Thanks!

Hi,

You might want to refer to the Governments Set Up a Business in the UK page at...

https://www.gov.uk/set-up-business-uk/overview

Also everyone earning in the UK must pay tax so refer to this...

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/factsheets/hometraders.pdf

A business online though, I am not sure, how that works.

Hope that helps!

Regards

If you have issues setting it all up, we can host and handle it here.
Just apply for PFDN once approved you will be able to upload commercial Addons and sell em here.
The safety are quite good, all files uploaded goes to a random folder, no source codes are released from this system and all sold commercial Addons get a new filename every 24h.
The system detects various sources and it sends us reports if many downloads are made on a single item from a user who purchased it.

This is what we would want to see for PHPFusion. Developers coming at it seriously. Good luck and if you need help.. know that developers will always support developers.

Don't forget VAT!!

This is why I would not bother selling nothing, not until at least I get advice from a lawyer. Would not want to earn money for it to then crawl back and bite me on the butt by the tax man in 5 years saying "Fang you did not declare tax for all the quality pf addons you sold in the last 5 years, we are now taking you to jail".

No it's nothing like that.
Yeah I have to keep track of every sell but it's not the first time I'm doing this.

For the VAT:

Quote

You must register for VAT with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) if your business’ VAT taxable turnover is more than £81,000.

I will be self-employed and I will pay all my taxes and keep recordings of everything as I sell. It's not the first time I am doing this, I have my own company back home :) . Just have to get accustomed to the UK laws and regulations in this case. I won't start until I am 100% sure it's legal.

I am not an accountant neither a lawyer. I have knowledge in accounting but not in law. I will be looking for a lawyer because the one I have now it's not accustomed to the UK law and I don't think he can practice in UK.

Indeed however don't think its any different in the case of businesses. We might get more help up here mind you. Like funding, support and anything else to help start a business. :)

Actually I will be doing freelancing for now and for me to be able to pay my taxes I have to be self-employed. Probably I will establish a company in the UK later. :)

Yeah but if you earn under the threshold you might not need to pay tax. If you earn a low income you don't pay tax or may be entitled to a deduction.

http://startups.co.uk/vat-optional-flat-rate-scheme/ says it's a 12% of your sales. Just go register and opt in - (or ask Craig to make you a VAT infusion :G)

Not talking about the VAT. If earn over 36k ore more than you will have to apply for VAT, till than you don't need to pay the VAT taxes :)
I am not using PHPFusion for my online shop, it will be a separate CMS. I will integrate some options from it in PHPFusion.
