I need some advice on whether or not I should remake my site on v7....

I'm in the process of making a community entertainment site using v6, and I was pretty happy with my progress until v7 came out. Do you think I should finish my site on v6 and wait for v7 to mature (get more themes and infusions), or should I just switch to v7 and save myself the work of transferring files when my infusions are updated?

Go with V7 100%. I have a huge gaming site. Now i have closed it for a week, to upgrade v7. Im almost half way there because lots of mods have to be redone. Anyway IT IS WORTH IT. More you develope on v6, the more hassle you ll have when upgrading v7 later. http://www.aerix.pri.ee/UUS/news.php <--- Check out what you can do out of v7 B)

Well, I don't agree with you.

If I start new from bottom site I will take of course v7 becouase it was new "model". But if I have big v6 site, I will not update on v7.

First v7 still is not out, second it don't have enough infusions and mods like v6 so in next least one year it will still be better to choose v6 over v7. Yes, core file for v7 is probablly better, but with mods in v6 I don't know. Forum in v6 and v7 are almost the same, it is not changed too much. Still very poor with some basic functions for one simple forum today.

v7 forum have the same database tables structure like v6, so don't excpect in v7 also sub-cats, not to mention multilevel sub-cats what most forums today have.

So is it worth to move big sites from v6 to v7? After seven days of playing with v7 on test site, still I didn't saw "must" update reasons.

If you know enough PHP, you can easily recode the stuff from V7. I prefer V7, it's just a lot nicer....

Remember that some of mods can be done via v7 output handling. I know that many users are/will be confused about v7. But remember - v7 features will be commonly used in the future and we will still expand features for incoming versions...

I believe you have a valid argument because version 7 although great, does not have a lot of active infusions for it yet. I agree that you should probably wait until all of the features you need are available.

I understand Jock.
Most of my PHPFusion sites are rather small and will upgrade (I won't do it before the final version, though :)).
But two or three maybe will not, or not immediately.
http://www.meeetooo.info for instance has 25 infusions (23 actively running) + two or three core mods, and I'm not even sure I'll upgrade this one.

I 100% think you should upgrade to V7.
If you have a big v6 site, and understand enough php to convert over your v6 mods, then what are you waiting for! :D

Final revision, I hope...

I suggest NOT to advise people to upgrade a live site to a RC version...

If you use a lot of mods and infusions, then you better wait until the mods are updated.
And remember: There are only a limited number of themes for v7. It would be boring, if every site has the same theme :D

Just wait one month, and then the situation will change ;)

I agree that you should wait...first untill PHP Fusion 7.0 without any of those MS-style names(alfa,beta...) is published and secondly to wait at least few months untill Fusion crew don't fix bugs that they didn't see at Release time...third there will be much more themes, mods and infusions...:D

P.S. slaughter, what happend to your avatar? I think old one is much better...:D :D :D

But if you have MySQL and PHP skills good enough you do mods and stuff like that yourself.

Depends my friend, depends. Yes most of the v7 default themes are nicer than v6 default themes, more corectly they have biger and nicer text so they look nicer, but you are able do that with v6 also very effectly. Beside that I don't see any v7 theme design advantage. Yes, v7 themes have text resize and panel sides turn off and on functions, but I will put that functions on one site only if I made that site for my enemy.

Anywhere v7 is young, it is even not born, we don't know them good, so time will tell. My dissapoints with v7 is of course forum and that was case also with v6 forum.

I think tricky part in v6 and v7 core files are excatly in forums. They are both very poor with functions like multilevel subcats, forum navigation bars are disaster, I surf on PHP Fusion more than two years and still many times I click on forum cat or better to say forum_id=0 which is listed there, but it don't have link, so anybody who want more, is forced to made modifcations, when he do that, than he have problem with updates and etc. Who will remember all changed things inside core files when update arrive?

Solution is of course to compare default core files with those changed core files, vbulletin have that function, so everybody knows when he update his core files what he was changed from core files, but I think that is too much to ask from one open source team.

My point here is that v7 serie will be how long in future actual before v8, two or more years, so that's mean v7 will have forum like that in next few years. I know just one thing, this kind of the forum will force people to modificate him, to do that, they will need to modificate also some other core files beside forum. So when v8 arrive, they will need start all over again, becouase default v7 forum didn't have enough stuffs. But that is life, so we must live that.

Perhaps. But PHP fusion is a foundation. Why start from fresh each time when you have a solid foundation to build from?
With the New V7 and better theming engine, you can create anything. It is so much more flexible now.
You can even rewire it into what you want it to do.
That's what I had with V6. Totally rewired it. With the new V7, it is so much easier to do stuff. I LOVE IT :)

I would be more inclined to offer my 2 cents, except the thread poster seems not be bothered to come back and join his own debate or even acknowledge the great advice many people offered.

@HobbyMan
Lol, sorry. I've been busy lately. I'm fourteen and I started camp this week.

I appreciate everyone's input, thanks.

Anyway, now that I'm back online...

Aside from the fact that v7 does not have all of the infusions and mods I need for my site, I still have my doubts about v7. I'm pretty good at modifying themes but I still haven't gotten used to the new v7 theme files. Maybe I'm just used to using v6.

I enjoy a lot of the new v7 features, too.

I'll probably wait a bit for more infusions to convert and brush up on my php skills by messing with my v7 site.

I have a v7 test site

Please don't ask these kinds of questions.
The final version will be released when all known bugs are solved and the DEV-team thinks, that the current version is ready for final release.
