I am creating a site for a sports club, I am putting results up regually into a article catagory but I want to know if there is a way of displaying the most recent result on the front page without writing a news item

any ideas much appreated

Enable latest_articles_panel would be a start.

Instead of news.php set articles.php as starting page.
