BBCode issue?

Lately I have expirenced that showing a forum thread sometimes is extremely slow. When it happens it's kinda weird. Sometimes it affects all threads, and sometimes it affects only a few. The rest of the site works fine with no latency.
When it happens, the browser just waits up to a minute before anything happens after clicking the link.
Not long ago, I and some other guys made an infusion, and when we started using bbcode for some pages there, it also started going slow as molassis... this is why I think it is related to the parseubb function or something.
Any clue on what causes this? Should the parseubb-function be rewritten/optimized or is it a general PHP issue with some slow functions?
In any case, it's annoying as hell.
