What if a member of your site die? Yes I know it's a bit "off topic" but maybe anyone have some thoughts to share.

I haven't givven this any thoughts because I have not been in this situation, but today I got the sad message that one of my members resently passed away. I did not know him in person, but I feel sad anyway. I know he was very skilled in music, etc. (that's what my sites are about), and he also joined as a "VIP-Member" so I somehow got some feelings......you know what I mean.

I'm going to write a little news about this and will publish it in a day or two on my sites. I feel that's the least I can do.

With a total of almost 2000 members on my two sites I know there are a chance that members pass away, but I'm guess I never will be ready for it to happen....

I'm not sure what to do with the users account. What do you think? Just deleting it I feel isn't maybe the best thing to do.

Yeah, I'm a bit sad now........ :(

Maybe you have some thoughts to share?

Deleting would be the last thing you want to do. First out of respect, but second because you would also loose all the contributions the member made.

I do not now how banning (seems to be the wrong word, but we have no better option) will reflect in the contributions, but I can suggest that you at least edit the username or signature to reflect the passing.

The news items (if you have enough info, maybe an obituary in an article) seems logical, too.

Ken, it's very refreshing to see this side of the internet for a change. It's so easy to get a bit lost in cyber space with the anonymity it provides.

I definitely wouldn't remove the account. As Sheldon suggested, change the password. I'd add a brief tribute to his signature, as well as the news article.

;)

Death is almost never an invited guest, Ken. And you're not alone feeling sad and touched by the death of your member. It may be that there are other people feeling the same way as you are, sad and a little confused?

Share your feelings, your thoughts about it and invite others to share their thoughts and memories as well. That way you'll get it out, maybe share some sad moments, but also some fun and good ones as well...

I have a small reunion site on the side, with people from my wild youth and quite a few people have died too soon, too violent and very much too sadly, leaving families behind. We have some closed forums where we share memories, we have photos...

We don't get them back, but we can honour their lives by the way we behave and treat them afterwards. With love and respect.

Ja Devlesa, chavale...

At least you found out about it. Some members might die, and you would never know, they would just stop visiting one day.

It is kind of sad.

Hi all. Thanks a lot for all your thoughts and ideas. For me, deleting or banning a dead member, sound a bit harsh so I have added -RIP- to the end of the members nick, so others can see he is not with us anymore. Then I wrote a little news telling about the member passing away. He will also continue to be in the "VIP-Member" user group.
