Herein lies the irony of this whole thread (and the point of my post above): its not about whether or not you can remove the footer text, whether or not he has made a donation but the idea that he's "advertising" his site here. Here's something from the description of this forum:

Despite the name of the site, loyalty is not what leaps to ones mind seeing that the copyright notice is removed.

It's a common respect for the author, that you let "Powered by PHPFusion copyright © 2003-2006 by Nick Jones." stay on your site..
Even if it's not required in the GNU/GPL...
If you don't respect the author, then don't use his work...

Hey guys, it's not against any terms of the GNU/GPL to remove the footer text. It is just a lot better if you leave it since Nick has put so must time into making this great CMS and deserves the credit.

Yes, its always a good idea to advertise your Fusion site - with the "Powered by PHPFusion" removed - here. You could have good looking bikini clad babes all over the site but we'd notice that phrase was missing :D.
