Ok so when your in double colum mode for news, as admin you get a cool little icon which jumps stright to the edit page for that news item.
Why does this not appear in single colum mode?

It's a theme thingie. If you use a newer theme you'll have the edit button in both single and double news style.
If you do a search, you'll find a way to make it appear also in older themes.
