Disable Break Codes?

I am trying to get my site HTML Validated, but something with the break codes is causing it not to be, I looked in the news posts, and it has generated
<br /> 
codes.

How would I go abouts getting rid of it doing that or instead having it do the normal
<br>

The <br /> one is valid XHTML the second one <br> not. What's wrong?

oh, in that case how do I change it to an xhtml when instead of
