So I found a theme that I'd like to modify by replacing all the images and such, the only problem is that the credit link to the original author links to a dead website. Does this mean I can remove the link??

(They're all version 7 themes, if that's of any consolation.)

I don't see any other option. It's actually on quite a few themes and I have no way to contact the authors, I got the themes off a site with hundreds of PHPFusion themes.

Just trying to not do anything illegal here.

Even if his website is down, you are not allowed to remove the copyright.
