Internal Server error

I all
I've inherited a php fusion installation, v6.01.15.
Initially it was on a windoze box but was suffering "Fast CGI" errors.
Having read this was a "MS issue" I requested the site was moved to Linux hosting where it is now.
But now I get
I raise a ticked with the hosting company (Who are pretty good normally)
They have said
So I checked the server and there is no .htaccess file in the root of the application
What is my best next step?
Upgrade?
Reinstall?
I'm open to offers!!!

Error 500 usually happens if there is a code on your htaccess that is not supported on our system. We only support mod rewrite on htaccess. Every other code generates an error 500. Please make sure to comment out or remove the unsupported code.
