Is there a way to limit the chat box posts to one or two in a row instead of people saying ten things in a row?

I'm assuming you're talking about the ShoutBox and limiting the number of shouts showing??

you can alter the number of shouts showing in System Admin - Miscellaneous Settings - Number of shoutbox posts:

How to alter the default number of ShoutBox posts showing...

You could look into the Flood interval setting in Misc. settings and see if you can find a suitable setting.

I believe it's controlling the rate of posts rather than the number of shouts in a row though.
